How to Upload Plugins to Your Minecraft Server

Minecraft plugins let you extend your server with new features, commands, and gameplay enhancements. If you are running your server on our control panel, you can easily upload plugins you’ve downloaded from trusted sources like SpigotMC or Modrinth.

This guide will walk you through how to upload plugins using either an FTP client or the built-in web file manager.

1. Your server must be running software that supports Spigot plugins, like SpigotMC or PaperMC. If it isn't, contact us and we can change it over for you.

2. Make sure you have the plugins ready to upload. Spigot plugins always end in a ".jar" file extension. Sometimes plugins might come with other config files with them in a folder. Make sure the plugins are built for the Minecraft/Spigot version, otherwise they may not work.

3. Access our web file manager. Login to https://game.extravm.com and navigate to your server management page, then click the "Files" tab at the top. Otherwise you can use a desktop FTP client, such as FileZilla or WinSCP to manage your server files. If you want to use a desktop FTP client then you can find the connection information on the "Settings" page.

4. Upload your plugins files to the "/plugins" folder on your server. If one doesn't exist, make sure your server was started at least once using Spigot or Paper server software. Once uploaded the plugin files should be like "/plugins/YourPlugin.jar".

5. Restart your server to load the newly added plugins. Once started, some plugins might generate plugin configuration files which you can access in folders they might create inside the /plugins folder (for example "/plugins/YourPlugin/config.yaml". You can run the command "/plugins" in-game (or just the word "plugins" in the web console) to see a list of active plugins on your server.

Final Notes

- Always download plugins from trusted sources to avoid security risks.
- Make sure the plugin version matches your server’s Minecraft version (e.g., 1.20, 1.19).
- If a plugin fails to load, check the console logs (in the "/logs" folder) for errors. This often means the plugin is outdated or incompatible.
- You can upload multiple plugins at once by dragging them all into the /plugins folder.
